What permanent lighting is

Permanent lighting is a row of color-changing LEDs mounted in a slim track under your eave or along your fascia. In daylight it's barely visible. At night you choose any color, pattern or schedule from an app: warm white every evening, red and green in December, orange for Halloween, red, white and blue for the Fourth, your team's colors on game day.

No ladders every November, no tangled strands and nothing to store.

Uplights & driveway lights

Round out the look with lighting that works all year. Uplights ($350 each) wash light up columns, stone, palms and oak trunks. Each one includes its share of the transformer and timer. Driveway and path lights ($295 each) line the way to your door. Both come in fixed warm white or color-changing.

Permanent vs. seasonal: the math

Leasing seasonal lights for a one-story home with 150 feet of roofline costs $1,400 the first year and $980 each year after, about $5,320 over five years, and it covers Christmas only. Permanent Standard track on the same home is about $5,100, one time, and it works for every holiday, every year.

If you mainly want a classic warm white Christmas with C9 bulbs, leasing is the better value. If you want lighting all year and never want a ladder on your house again, permanent pays for itself.
